Abstract Piracy is an act of criminal violence at sea. It can include acts happened on land, in the air, or in other bodies of water or on a shore. Piracy or pirating is the name of a specific crime under customary international law. The modern pirate stereotype owes its tradition mostly to that of the Caribbean pirate and such depictions as Captain Hook, Long John Silver and various adaptations of the pirates. In these and many other books, movies, and legends pirates are portrayed as “swashbucklers” and “plunderers.”
