Abstract |
The article focuses on the processes of mataphorization and symbolization of the concept “cross”. Owing to the widening of its lexical meaning the concept acquires new significance and becomes a metaphor. Due to the narrowing it becomes a symbol. Besides the attempt is made to analyse and describe the biblical concept “cross” with relation to and in terms of the sign theory of the language. The study shows that as a symbol “cross” combines the characteristic features of an index and an icon.
