Abstract	Chagas disease is caused by infection with the protozoa Trypanosoma cruzi. Transmission to humans usually occurs through contact with faeces of vector insects (triatomine bugs also called assassin, or kissing bugs), including the ingestion of contaminated food, transfusion of infected blood, congenital transmission, organ transplantation or laboratory accidents.
