Abstract The article familiarizes Ukrainian foreign language teaching community with the key concepts of language testing. Most common misconceptions of ELT assessment are analyzed with respect to implications they have for teaching and assessment practices in Ukraine. Theoretical as well as practical issues of language testing are treated in terms of basic terminology operationalized in language testing, major characteristics of a language test, task formats and item types typically applied by leading European language examinations boards.
