Abstract	Based on the analysis of domestic and foreign scientific literature, the article substantiates the essence of modernization of physical education and sports in the system of higher education. Scientific works and dissertations of Ukrainian, Italian, American, and Polish researchers have been considered. The definitions of modernization, formulated by representatives of various scientific fields within the framework of modern modernization theory have been analyzed. The essential characteristics of modernization have been singled out. The essence of the concept of "modernization of physical education and sport in the system of higher education" have been determined. The necessity of studying the experience of European higher education institutions in updating the contents of educational programs have been emphasized.
