Abstract |
In an era marked by significant ecological challenges and growing concerns about social inequality, the concept of sustainable development emerges as a beacon of hope, guiding humanity towards a future where economic growth does not come at the expense of environmental degradation and social disparity [3]. This principle is not just about environmental stewardship; it represents a comprehensive framework that integrates economic viability, environmental protection, and social equity. Central to achieving this triad of objectives are the value orientations that inform and direct our actions and policies. These values are critical in molding the attitudes and behaviors of individuals, communities, and institutions, encouraging a shift towards more sustainable practices and decision-making processes.
We consider Sustainable Development as a holistic approach that seeks to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This definition, first popularized by the Brundtland Commission in 1987 [1; 4], has evolved and been enriched by numerous studies and interpretations across various disciplines. Modern European researchers have further expanded on this concept, emphasizing its multidimensional nature that encompasses environmental, economic, and social sustainability. Purpose of the Study. The primary purpose of this study is to explore the value orientations that underpin the concept of sustainable development. This involves an examination of the ethical, economic, social, and environmental values that inform and shape the understanding and implementation of sustainable development. By identifying these value orientations, the study aims to contribute to a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of what drives and sustains efforts towards achieving sustainable development goals. |
