Abstract Surgical department is a medical and diagnostic complex, whose functioning is regulated by sanitary and hygienic norms. According to the generally accepted standards, the structure of the surgical department includes wards, dressing rooms, a manipulation room, operating theatres and, in modern hospitals, an operating block. The department consists of two separate parts - clean and purulent, each with its own ward and dressing room. The main task of the sanitary-and-hygienic regime of the surgical department at the present stage is to eliminate the negative influence of the factors of the hospital environment on patients and personnel, to provide full hygienic, somatic and mental comfort for patients and optimal working conditions for personnel. The sanitary-and-hygienic regime includes not only compliance with the capacity standards of the wards, ensuring an optimal microclimate, bacteriological and chemical composition of the air environment, ventilation and lighting of the premises, but also the supply of good quality drinking water, timely and complete removal and disinfection of waste, providing patients with a rational and balanced diet, cleaning of the premises, washing and changing of linen, observance of the rules of personal hygiene, etc.
