Abstract

Дослідження спрямоване на аналіз змін у репрезентації історіїкримськотатарського народу в українських шкільних підручниках з історії після 2014-2016 років, а також виявлення тенденцій до подолання негативних стереотипів таінтеграції кримськотатарської тематики в загальноукраїнський історичний наратив.Вивчено підручники для учнів 5–11 класів, проаналізовано роботи відомих авторів тапроведено дискурсивний аналіз. Дослідження виявило позитивну динаміку у висвітленніісторії кримськотатарського народу, зокрема в контексті трагічних подій, таких якдепортація 1944 року, а також в аспектах, пов’язаних із державотворчими прагненнями,внеском у дисидентський рух та сучасними викликами. Сучасні підручники поступовопереходять до більш об’єктивного висвітлення історичних фактів, інтегруючитематику кримських татар у спільний національний наратив. Це дозволяє не лишеподолати попередні стереотипи, а й забезпечити глибше розуміння взаємодії міжукраїнцями та кримськими татарами в різні історичні періоди. Основні тенденціївключають перегляд наративів, визнання внеску кримськотатарського народу в українськесуспільство, а також боротьбу з імперськими стереотипами, що актуалізувалося післяанексії Криму у 2014 році.

This study examines the evolution of the representation of Crimean Tatar historyin Ukrainian school textbooks, focusing on the period after 2014-2016. This timeframe issignificant due to the socio-political transformations initiated by the 2014 annexation of Crimeaby Russia, which spurred a reassessment of historical narratives in Ukrainian education. Theresearch analyzes textbooks for grades 5-11, employing content analysis, comparative analysis,and discourse evaluation to identify changes in narratives about the Crimean Tatar people.The findings reveal a positive shift in the portrayal of Crimean Tatars in modern textbooks.Unlike earlier representations, which often focused exclusively on military conflicts and stereotypicalnarratives, contemporary educational materials have begun to present a more nuanced and balancedview. Particular attention is given to the tragic events of the 1944 deportation, when the entireCrimean Tatar population was forcibly displaced by Soviet authorities. This aspect is now framedas a major historical injustice, with an emphasis on its long-term impact on the Crimean Tatarpeople. Textbooks also highlight their active participation in World War II on the side of the RedArmy, challenging persistent myths of widespread collaborationism.Moreover, modern textbooks increasingly acknowledge the state-building aspirations ofthe Crimean Tatars, particularly during the early 20th century, exemplified by the activities ofthe Crimean Tatar Kurultai and the proclamation of the Crimean People’s Republic in 1917.These events are portrayed as pivotal moments of national self-determination, demonstratingthe Crimean Tatars’ agency and contributions to broader historical processes. The analysisalso notes the inclusion of their significant role in the dissident movement during the Soviet era,which was instrumental in the struggle for human rights and the eventual return of CrimeanTatars to their homeland.Contemporary challenges faced by the Crimean Tatars, especially following the 2014annexation of Crimea by Russia, are another critical focus in the textbooks. These include thesuppression of political and cultural rights under Russian occupation and the community’sactive participation in defending Ukraine’s sovereignty during the ongoing Russian-Ukrainianwar. These additions reflect broader efforts within Ukrainian historiography to decolonizehistorical narratives, shifting away from Soviet-era stereotypes and embracing a more inclusiveand multicultural perspective.This research underscores the importance of integrating the experiences and contributionsof the Crimean Tatars into the Ukrainian historical narrative. Modern textbooks increasinglyemphasize periods of peaceful coexistence, cultural exchange, and shared struggles betweenUkrainians and Crimean Tatars, alongside episodes of conflict. By highlighting the multifacetedrelationship between these communities, contemporary educational resources contribute to amore comprehensive understanding of Ukraine’s history as a multicultural state.The findings demonstrate that the representation of Crimean Tatar history in Ukrainianschool textbooks has significantly improved since 2014-2016. However, while substantial progresshas been made, continued efforts are essential to ensure a fully comprehensive depiction of theCrimean Tatar people’s historical and cultural legacy. Expanding the scope of narratives to include not only their hardships, but also their achievements and their enduring contributionsto Ukraine’s historical development, is critical. These steps will help foster a more inclusive andequitable understanding of Ukraine’s past, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to embracingits diverse cultural heritage.
