Рассмотрены история создания, структура, план изложения и характер информации, представленной в Обозрениях. Обозначены их составители с указанием краткой исторической справки о них. На основании анализа обозрений украинских губерний составлен социальный портрет местного населения с учетом его этнической, религиозной, социальной принадлежности. Социальный портрет населения украинских губерний составлен на основании описаний в «Военно-статистических обозрениях Российской империи» быта и нравов местного населения, а также уровня его «умственной» образованности посредством анализа данных о количестве и типах учебных заведений, имеющихся в губерниях, численности учащихся в них, их соотношении к общей численности населения губернии, а также численности учительско-преподавательского состава. Подсчитано количество учащихся, приходящихся на одного педагогического работника. Все данные обобщены как по губерниям (Правобережным, Левобережным и Южно-Украинским), так и в целом по Украине.The paper explores «Military Statistical Review of Russian Empire» as a source on social and economic history of Ukrainian provinces in the middle of the 19th century. The authors look into the history of creation, structure, presentation plan and the character of information presented in the Reviews. The people who compiled this historical source are indicated and brief information about them is given. Based on the analysis of reviews of the Ukrainian provinces, a social portrait of the local population was compiled, it takes into account its ethnic, religious and social affiliation. The social portrait of the population of Ukrainian provinces was compiled on the basis of the description of life and customs of the local population in «Military Statistical Review of Russian Empire», as well as the level of its education and intelligence via analysis of data on the number and types of educational establishments available in the Ukrainian provinces, the number of students who studied there, the ratio to the total population of the province, and number of the teaching staff. The student-teacher ratio is calculated.
