They are usually based on the notion that the limits to the use of our environment have already been reached. They differ, however, in their approaches towards dealing with this situation. The first is based on the belief that any human society is part of, and depends on, an ecosystem. The ecosystem constrains the development of that society. It is necessary to respect the carrying capacity of the ecosystems in order to attain sustainability.
