The Diffraction of Electromagnetic Waves on the Periodic Heterogeneities and Its Use for Realization of Practical Technical and Electronic Devices of Millimeter and Submillimeter Wavelength Range
Rybalko, Oleksandr Oleksandrovych
Among the open structures, which are used in millimeter and submillimeter (MSM) wave engineering, diffraction gratings (DG) made in different modifications (periodic metal and metal-dielectric structures (MDS)) are of primary importance along with open cavities and open waveguides. Such systems are basic in the design of electromagnetic oscillation sources and electronic components of different instrumentation of such wavelength range. If there is a diffraction of electromagnetic fields by DG, “two-act” wave transformation usually takes place. When homogeneous plane wave falls on the plane one-dimensionally periodic grating, scattered field can be considered as a spectrum of homo- and heterogeneous plane waves. In this case body (incident) plane wave is transformed into body (scattered) homogeneous plane and heterogeneous (surface) waves and, thus, “two-act” transformation occurs. This type of the boundary-value problems has been thoroughly studied in the work and partly realized in the experiment. In addition, processes of surface wave transformation of distributed sources into body waves by periodic heterogeneities are of special interest. Such phenomenon can be watched when an electron beam (EB) moves uniformly near the metal DG or periodic MDS. In this case self-surface field of the EB is scattered by DG and at least one of its harmonics is transformed into body wave of the diffraction radiation or Cherenkov radiation. It should be noted, that transformation of the surface wave of EB by DG into the diffraction radiation is also an example of the “two-act” diffraction process. In addition, phenomena, connected with the transformation of DG of the surface waves of a dielectric waveguide (DW), play a great role in MSM engineering. In this case surface waves of a DW are transformed by the DG into surface waves of the DW or into body waves separated from them. A series of numerical calculations of electron beam generation in the threeelectrode electron-optical system has been performed with the help of the electromagnetic modeling FIT method both with the PBA technology. Effects of the initial blocking and ray laminarity failure have been modeled. Optimum electrode potentials have been obtained for generation of the low-energy intensive axial-symmetric electron beam with beam-crossover behind the last anode of electron gun. Electrodynamic properties of coupled quasi-optical open cavities in sources of millimeter radiation
(Laser Physics, 2000) Vorobiov, Hennadii Saveliiovych; Воробьев, Геннадий Савельевич; Воробйов, Геннадій Савелійович
The results of experimental studies of electrodynamic properties of coupled open millimeter-range cavities are presented. Cavities of the considered type can be employed in such electron devices as an orotron and an oscillator of diffraction radiation. It is demonstrated that a system of two open cavities coupled through strip diffraction gratings is best suited for the broadening of the transmission band of an open cavity system, allowing, at the same time, the Q factor to be sustained at a high level. The transmission band of such a system is five times broader than the transmission band of open cavities placed in series with respect to a distributed source emitting volume waves. Practical schemes of electron devices using coupled open cavities are described and analyzed. The results of experimental studies of some of these devices in the millimeter wavelength range are presented. (Telecommunications and Radio Engineering, 2007) Vorobiov, Hennadii Saveliiovych; Воробйов, Геннадій Савелійович; Воробьев, Геннадий Савельевич; Petrovskyi, Mykhailo Vasylovych; Петровский, Михаил Васильевич; Петровський, Михайло Васильович; Журба, Вячеслав Олегович; Журба, В`ячеслав Олегович; Zhurba, Viacheslav Olehovych; Ruban, А.I.; Belous, О.I.; Fisun, А.I.
General properties of the "classic" open resonators without heterogeneities as the base devices while determining the particularities of new modifications of the millimeter-wave and sub-millimeter-wave band resonant structures are disclosed in the paper. The properties of open resonators with periodic metal heterogeneities, coupled open resonators as well as various modifications of resonant metal-dielectric structures are considered. The way for further investigation of new modifications of the resonant quasi-optical structures is determined from the point of view of optimization of their output parameters.
