The importance of learning English in a globalised world
(Sumy State University, 2025) Bilovodska, V.
In the 21st century, English has emerged as a global communication tool, serving as a universal medium in various fields such as science, technology, business, and culture. According to the British Council, over 1.5 billion people worldwide study English as a second language, and more than 80% of scientific publications are written in English (Graddol, 2006). This linguistic dominance places new demands on individuals’ language skills as well as on educational and professional institutions. In contemporary academic practice, English serves as the lingua franca of the scientific community. Hyland (2015) notes that approximately 98% of publications in the natural sciences appear in English-language journals. This trend requires scientists, regardless of their country of origin, to master professional English terminology. Additionally, participating in international conferences, grant programs, and scientific collaborations is nearly impossible without proficiency in English.

Integrating environmental education into a genre-based English foreign language writing class
(Sumy State University, 2024) Помогайбо, Юлія Василівна; Pomohaibo, Yuliia Vasylivna
Many fields of study are increasingly promoting awareness of the need to protect the ecosystem by thinking and acting “green,” the concept of environmental education actually has a long history. Considering the ambitious objectives of environmental education, increasing students’ awareness of environmental problems and possible solutions is a challenging task. This article suggests practical activities for integrating environmental education into English language teaching (ELT) based on the experiences of different authors, who added environmentally related elements to an English as a foreign language (EFL) writing class. Since the general EFL teaching and learning process in our context applies the genre-based approach (GBA), this article also discusses how environmental issues can be incorporated using that approach, especially for teaching the productive skills. With the number of challenges facing our planet, it is critical to raise students’ environmental awareness and teach them environmental values. Connecting environmental concerns with language instruction (1) increases students’ interest in significant current issues, (2) educates them on how to make the planet more healthy, and (3) offers real contexts for language learning and authentic interaction. Because environmental awareness has increased all over the world, there is a wider availability of appropriate materials, and environmentally themed topics are found in numerous resources.

An American Fail: Reflections of a U.S. Man Abroad
(Sumy State University, 2017) Quam, Ph.
Language is a form of currency. Every one of us deals in it daily. We exchange, barter, argue, persuade, describe and narrate with language. And just as some monetary currencies are more valued than others, language currencies are treated much the same way. In fact, I’d wager that if one were to match the strongest world monies to the country’s native language, one would find the so-called global languages at the top, and the English language chief among them. I feel confident that someone has done this already – or else, no one needs to because the results would not be all that surprising. But, as an educator, I must keep this language-as-currency metaphor in mind because it helps my frame of mind in the classroom, and keeps me cognizant of just how fortunate I am to be where I am from and speak the language I speak.

    Learnability and Issues
(Sumy State University, 2017) Mysak, I.I.
Have you noticed that we, English language instructors, have currently been teaching our students topical issues as well as relevant skills via English rather than English itself purely? Why does it work more efficiently than teaching the language itself? Two constituent aspects are: appealing to the all-human values, which, by default, exist inside everyone, and providing the sheltering opportunity for the students to be concealed at the rear of the language. Students plunge into relevant and applicable enviroment of topics where they feel in tune with the times. The other benefit is the elements of escapism from the responsibility of learning the strict rules of grammar, for instance, and drilling them in multiple exercises. Thus, they acquire new information together with learning both life skills and language skills. These two merge into one in the 21st century, i.e. learnability.

Written peer response is an important tool in English for academic purposes
(Sumy State University, 2017) Башлак, Ірина Анатоліївна; Башлак, Ирина Анатольевна; Bashlak, Iryna Anatoliivna
Over the past fifteen years, the process approach to composition, which was originally developed for first language instruction, has become popular among ESOL writing teachers. A key component of this approach is peer response (also known as peer review, peer feedback, peer editing, and peer evaluation),in which students read each other’s papers and provide feedback to the writer, usually answering specific questions the teacher has provided. In most cases the questions focus on organization and style, rather than surface-level grammar or spelling mistakes.
