Abstract The article addresses the role cognitive metaphor plays in the way the word ‘conflict’ collocates with other words in discourse. The aim is to reveal the metaphors that underline conventional expressions including or accompanying the word ‘conflict’ in the English language. It is shown that there is a wide range of cognitive metaphors which govern linguistic expression for the concept CONFLICT, among them orientational, structural and ontological ones can be observed.
