Abstract Africa has a landmass of just over 30.3 million km2, an area equivalent to the United States of America, Europe, Australia, Brazil, and Japan combined. As of 2004, Africa housed 885 million people (World Bank, 2005) in 53 countries of varied and diverse sizes, socio-cultural entities, and resource endowments, including fossil and renewable energy resources.
