Risk management is a rapidly developing discipline and there are many and varied views and descriptions of what risk management involves, how it should be conducted and what it is for. Market risk, in particular, is an area that has received increasing attention in the last decade as financial institutions’ trading activities have significantly grown. This paper analyses the failure of LTCM hedge fund in 1998 from a risk management perspective aiming at deriving implications for the managers of financial institutions and for the regulating authorities. The study concludes that the LTCM’s failure can be attributed primarily to its Value at Risk (VaR) system, which failed to estimate the fund’s potential risk exposure correctly.
