Abstract The paper presents the results of studies of the morphological features, the element and a phase composition for Al2O3/Cr/TiN hybrid coating surfaces, which were obtained using a combined method. We found an effect of a thermally annealed aluminum oxide sublayer on the coating surface relief and the element composition. It was demonstrated that the plasma-detonation deposition of the corundum powder was accompanied by the phase transformations of  and  in the initial powder material, and the electron irradiation of a ceramics was accompanied by a back restoration of the  phase in Al2O3, which, in its turn, allowed the formation of the surface of the high hardness.
