Abstract This article provides an analysis of the changes that took place in Bulgaria after year 1989. Its objective is to clarify the influence on the private business of the mass privatization performed, the way in which the denationalization was carried out, the bank crashes and cataclysms and Bulgaria’s accession to the EU. The conditions, business environment and the social background in which it occurred and developed provide an explanation of its current state and development.
