The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting mass shutdowns of economic activities of individual companies and even entire industries, as well as changes in the usual mode of social communication form significant socio-economic imbalances that manifest themselves in national, global and regional contexts. Today, it is too early to summarize the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, as its second wave is still gaining momentum. But the first conclusions, in particular, on the basis of the above analysis, can already be made. According to the World Bank, the destructive impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is estimated at 1.5% of world GDP, and according to the International Monetary Fund - at 3%, which is significantly higher than from all four previous epidemics analyzed above. The largest pandemics in the 21st century and preceding the COVID-19 epidemic were bird flu (H5N1 virus), coronavirus lung disease (SARS), «Mexican» or swine flu (A/H1N1 virus), virus EVD). The SARS pandemic in 2002 became a critical starting point for the macroeconomic impact of epidemics on the global economy, as the World Bank subsequently prepared an annual analytical report summarizing the potential risks of possible pandemics and recommended measures against the epidemiological response. The article summarizes the consequences of these pandemics on the following grounds: general characteristics (country of origin, year of pandemic, number of cases, number of deaths, geographical coverage, most affected countries); economic consequences (industries most affected and developed as a result of the epidemic, the impact on exports, the loss of GDP of the most affected countries, economic losses from the pandemic worldwide); social consequences (loss of jobs). Analysis of the social and economic consequences of the most famous pandemics of the XXI century allows to adequately understand and predict the consequences of the current pandemic, as well as to provide recommendations for the timely application of effective regulatory measures. This should provide an informational basis for a more balanced approach to dealing with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in real time, aimed at reducing epidemiological threats to public health and mitigating the negative socio-economic losses from quarantine.
