Kiev Academy as the bridge between the West and the East

Abstract

Києво-Могилянська Академія відіграла значну роль в історії України. У філософській думці це був перехідний етап від схоластики до сучасної філософії, від примирення старого і нового задля спрямування увагу до західної, в тому числі польської культури. Значна роль в діяльності Академії належить Лазарю Барановичу (1620-1693), Інокентію Гізелю (1600-1683), і Феофану Прокоповичу (1681-1736) - ученим, чиї філософські погляди характеризують різні богословські підходи до проблеми освіти. Ці вчені цінували в людині розум, а не релігійні переконання і соціальне походження, що стало можливим великою мірою завдяки їх знайомству з думками та ідеями провідних мислителів Західної Європи. Вони сприяли формуванню української нації як складової Європейського співтовариства.The Kiev-Mogilany Academy played a significant role in the history of Ukraine. In philosophical thought it was a transitional stage from scholasticism to modern philosophy, from the reconciliation of the old and the new in philosophical thought to directing attention to Western culture, including Polish culture. A significant role in the Academy was played by Lazar Baranowytch (1620–1693), Innocent Gizel (1600–1683), and Feofan Prokopovytch (1681–1736) – scholars, whose philosophical opinions are characterized by a distinct theological focus. These scholars valued reason in man, and not religious beliefs and family background, which became possible in great measure thanks to the acquaintance with the thought and leading ideas of Western Europe. They promoted the membership of the Ukrainian nation to the European community.
