Abstract The effective spectrum and wave functions of electron states in graphene under the electromagnetic wave with circular polarization are found. The band gap in the graphene spectrum induced by the electromagnetic wave is calculated. Occurrence of such gap is shown to have the nature of the parametric resonance. The effective energy of the electron state in graphene is proved to be the energy averaged over the period of the electromagnetic wave.
